Some of you might remember that I did the 30 Day of GOOD Challenge to be a Vegetarian several months ago. A few weeks ago I decided to try to be a vegetarian “fo’ realz” – for a number of reasons, but primarily because I was going to read Jonathan Safron Foer’s Eating Animals only to think that if I read it, I’d be a vegetarian based on what I already know about the meat industry – and based on that logic, I figured I might as well be one.
I’ve been doing pretty good at it – mostly because I have a primarily vegetarian-based diet anyway, but the other day I found myself missing a few things. Namely:
- Pozole
- Bacon-wrapped hot dogs
- Carne Asada Tacos from the various taco stands that exist in Los Angeles
I found a recipe for vegetarian pozole that I want to try and my friend May, who is a vegan, provided me with a link to making shitake mushrooms that taste like bacon.
Carne Asada tacos though (generally fried in lard) is probably a lament I can’t really find an alternative around – but that’s okay too. I’m looking forward to this food adventure!

Glad you found the posole, and I hope you like it. I’m not going to say it tastes like the real thing, tripe is probably pretty hard to imitate, but I think it has some of the same flavors.
As far as tacos go, agreed trying to mimic carne asada won’t go too well, but you might like these: http://herbivoracious.com/2010/05/grilled-tofu-and-pepper-vegetarian-tacos-recipe.html
Thanks for posting the recipe (and for linking to the taco recipe!)! I think I’ll be okay – was never a huge fan of tripe anyway…though not sure how much of that it contributes to the flavor of soup I’m missing! I’ll have a follow-up post after I’ve tested the recipe! 🙂
use canned young jackfruit to do the asada.
I haven’t tried this recipe, but it’s at least a starting point: http://www.thevegancookbook.com/2009/12/vegan-carne-asada.html
i use young jackfruit to make vegan pulled pork sandwiches. and they turn out far better than the ones you can get in some veg restaurants.
