Supposed To Be (cc.tran) - Single Cover

I was talking to friends the other day about just letting things be and enjoying life – which is often easier said than done. I think it’s funny and it’s sad how difficult it is to just…bask – to just enjoy what you have without letting thoughts of “what if’s” and “what next?” creep into the fold. Sure, those things are inevitable. You can’t stop the forward rush of time and tomorrow’s fast approach, but worrying about them does little good about enjoying what you have while you can.  There’s something to be said about that mix of excitement and peace – about believing for just a second that time can stand still and while it does, all is right in the world.

Anyhow, that conversation reminded me of Supposed To Be, a song I wrote about a year ago about just this very topic.  I figured I’d upload it for the world to (possibly!) enjoy.  It’s free if you want to sign up for my mailing list.  I won’t mind if you unsubscribe shortly afterwards

I ended up doing a YouTube video of a song that felt like a reflection of the day.  My song “Hmm” – which has a humming part to it (hence the title).  I wrote it on a bad day a long time ago while also thinking about the economy and how people’s lives have been shaped from it, and just how people’s lives become shaped in general.  How often have we chosen a path, watch time passed, and suddenly wonder why it is we “fight the good fight” when it’s not even that good?

In truth, I wrote most of Believe several weeks ago around Jesse’s birthday actually.  He and I were having a random conversation about love and logic to which he mentioned the line “as if love has logic” which got me to thinking because as a self-proclaimed “intellichick” sometimes I think my logic is the biggest problem.  Emotions aren’t logical in the least (except that it is logical that people have them), but my logic is all about protocol and “yes/no” and – whether I consciously do it or not – I’m always weighing percentages.

So while I’m far from Temprance Brennan of Bones, some of these logical aspects of this song is kind of how I think.  But the thinking isn’t really the focus of the song – it’s the believing, which – for any believer of anything – often has no logic seat of which to rest your laurels on.

Ruby Slippers

I wrote this awhile ago and in testing out my new guitar, I ended up recording a YouTube video of it.  The song has obvious references to The Wizard of Oz and is about the idea of the yellow brick road as the road to life.
