The (In)Visible Women of Technology

Written on October 7, 2011 at 2:27 pm, by

24720422_1453032576_mThis past week I’ve been confronted by the idea of the visibility of women in technology – or rather, the realization of a certain level of invisibility. Today is Ada Lovelace Day – she is attributed for conceptualizing the first computer program…in the mid-1800s.  Fast forward to this past week, while watching the live streaming of AdobeMAX, I noted the following on Twitter:

I think this might be the first time I’ve seen a woman (Emmy Huang) as a featured presenter at a major tech event. #AdobeMaxintellichick 10/4/2011

Thanks for Thinking Differently: In Memory of Steve Jobs

image“You can’t connect the dots looking forward; you can only connect them looking backwards. So you have to trust that the dots will somehow connect in your future. You have to trust in something — your gut, destiny, life, karma, whatever. This approach has never let me down, and it has made all the difference in my life.”

Design Case Study: Amazon Drop-Down

Written on September 6, 2011 at 12:11 pm, by

Good job Amazon for this new design roll-out that highlights their key free offerings and their deals.  Definitely

  • considers the user
  • leverages interest in free content
  • shows Amazon’s positive offerings.
Additionally, it’s also not at all intrusive – disappearing the moment someone starts typing.

California: The Earthquake Diva

Written on August 23, 2011 at 5:43 pm, by

I posted this on Twitter today –

East Coast and Colorado?!  I really hope California doesn’t decide to go all diva today too.

Antoine RJ Wright wrote back to me:

@intellichick according to earthquake.usgs.gov/earthquakes/re… – no one can touch Cali Diva-ness ;)

The link featured a view similar to the one below —

I think those dots are the West Coast’s collective giggle of Earthquake Diva-ness. :D In the end though, somehow I think the East Coast will get the last laugh.

Social Media Pick-Up Lines

Written on August 15, 2011 at 12:41 pm, by

I had fun with this after reading “Tweet here often? Pick-up lines for the technorati" on CNN. Here’s my geeky pick-up line contributions:

"Give me your Google+ name and I’ll put you in your own circle."

"If you and I become twitter friends, we could have our own hashtag."

"I’ll follow you…wherever you want me to."

“If the world was Twitter, all my tweets would be about you.”

“Friend me on Facebook, I have an awesome newsfeed.”

Girl: “Wow, you have a lot of friends on Facebook” (or “…followers on Twitter.”)
Guy: “…that’s what she said.” <wink>
