Be Geekfantastic, Or Just Fantastic

For my breakfast study break, I would like to take this moment to be geekfantastic. I am wearing my Star Wars Celebration IV track jacket. I love this jacket and generally it is worn for my own benefit, but today it’s for a first grader named Katie. And in addition to that, I’m wearing it today because it’s fantastic to be exactly who you are.
This moment is for my fellow girls growing up who played more Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles than Barbies in the sandbox.
This moment is for my Star Trek friends who sojoured on in days before it became a movie with Chris Pine, Zachary Pinto, and Zoe Saldana.

When I cut my hair short, I got several comments that I looked like “such and such” person. It could have been due to me (I am constantly being mistaken for someone else, and I don’t think it’s just the “all Asian girls look alike” stereotype) or it could have been the haircut – the bob style haircut made famous by 1920s stars like Louise Brooks. So I thought I’d have a little fun with this idea (and break from work, school, and my NaNoWriMo novel) and showcase the versatility of this haircut.

Honor Flight Guardian at the USMC (Iwo Jima) Memorial
As Ed read out the names of Veterans at Sunday service, he left out the rank but affixed to each name a branch of service and the war in which each had served. With every name that echoed within the grey concrete walls of the gothic-style cathedral of the First Congregational Church of Los Angeles, a Veteran was supposed to stand to be recognized. Not all names had a Veteran present, but enough were there that America’s legacy of twentieth-century wars came to life:

The Length of a Haircut: Donate Your Hair

On Saturday, I cut off eight-inches of hair – this time for Pantene’s Beautiful Lengths program which creates wigs for cancer patients from donated hair. A couple of years ago I cut off about ten-inches for the Locks of Love program. Both these lengths were the minimums for the individual programs. It’s a memorable effort in that my “stylist” Jorge (of “Jorge’s” aka the place in Koreatown where I get my hair cut for $10) remembered me from the last time I donated my hair, but I also feel that it’s memorable because people don’t participate in programs like this enough.
