A Song A Day: You Got Me

Colbie Caillat's Breakthrough album

Song #12 Colbie Caillat’s You Got Me

Why I Picked It: This is on my “happy song” list.  Every time I hear it, it makes me happy. You Got Me is from Colbie Caillat’s album Breakthrough.

Why I Like It: The happiness of the song is evident in its predominantly head-bopping beat and the playful chord sounds of a synth keyboard.  The simple playfulness of the song is expressed lyrically as well in the sentiment of how another person can make one happy – from the opening verse:

A Song A Day: Heartbeats

Heartbeats from Jose Gonzalez's Veneer album

Heartbeats from Jose Gonzalez's Veneer album

Song #11 Jose Gonzalez’s Heartbeats

Why I Picked It: I couldn’t think of anything today, but this was on my list of songs to feature.  Jose Gonzalez’s Heartbeats (from his Veneer album) is an acoustic guitar driven, slow down of the electropop original by The Knife.  I learned about the song in an episode of Bones entitled “The Salt in the Wounds” and is one of my favorite cover songs since.

No Exceptions: Marriage Equality

Equality California

The U.S. Supreme Court tossed out any racially based limitations on marriage in the landmark 1967 Loving v. Virginia case. In the unanimous decision, the court said that “Under our Constitution, the freedom to marry, or not marry, a person of another race resides with the individual and cannot be infringed by the state.”

The above is the closing paragraph of the CNN article about the racist Louisiana judge who would not marry an interracial couple.  In my previous post “Empty Spaces/A Moment without Hapas“, I mention briefly my support of same-sex marriage, but to not draw away from the point of the post, I didn’t elaborate.  I am elaborating now…

A Song A Day: Everlong (KROQ Acoustic)

Everlong is on Foo Fighters' Skin & Bones

Song #10 Everlong

Why I Picked It: Not just any version of Everlong by the Foo Fighters.  The KROQ Acoustic version.  I actually heard this version first and though I do enjoy the original (from their Skin and Bones album), the acoustic version is my favorite.  I heard the acoustic version when I went with my friend Matt to a concert featuring Foo Fighters and Weezer.  It was definitely one of my more memorable concert experiences.

Empty Spaces: A Reflection on Interracial Relationships In My Life

I don't know Tiger Woods, but he's mixed race.

I don't know Tiger Woods, but he's mixed race and so is his family. Imagine golf without him...I know, right?

Today a news article about an interracial marriage being denied by a Louisiana Justice of the Peace circulated the internet (See Huffington Post).  You can read the article; it’s sentiments need not be repeated here.  It’s been less than 50 years since the ruling of Loving v. Virginia (1967) and regardless of the prejudice an individual might have against interracial marriage, interracial couples can marry.  That’s the lay of the law.  I won’t bog down this post with my desire that this same litmus test should apply to same-sex couples (just be aware that I think it should).
