La Vida de Caridad: The Girl with the Red Katana
Written on October 19, 2009 at 2:14 pm, by cct
The other night I stayed up watching documentaries on Netflix and working. When I’m up late I know better than to watch paranormal anything (though I make an exception for anything with cryptozoology because I don’t think Big Foot exists in urban Los Angeles and Nessie is obviously not going to attack me). Not that my documentary choices weren’t a little spooky – The Miracle at Fatima and one about English castles (did you know there’s something called Wood Henge and that castles used to be made wood?). But they weren’t anything to make my hair stand up on end.
Original Song: Ruby Slippers

I wrote this awhile ago and in testing out my new guitar, I ended up recording a YouTube video of it. The song has obvious references to The Wizard of Oz and is about the idea of the yellow brick road as the road to life.
YouTube and Lyrics below
Ruby Slippers (cc.tran)
Ruby slippers on my feet
They cant seem to take me home
Howd I end up so deep?
To feel so alone?
Every time I seem to walk
The further I get behind
Every time I seem to run
Im running out of time
A Song A Day: You Got Me

Song #12 Colbie Caillat’s You Got Me
Why I Picked It: This is on my “happy song” list. Every time I hear it, it makes me happy. You Got Me is from Colbie Caillat’s album Breakthrough.
Why I Like It: The happiness of the song is evident in its predominantly head-bopping beat and the playful chord sounds of a synth keyboard. The simple playfulness of the song is expressed lyrically as well in the sentiment of how another person can make one happy – from the opening verse:

Song #11 Jose Gonzalez’s Heartbeats
Why I Picked It: I couldn’t think of anything today, but this was on my list of songs to feature. Jose Gonzalez’s Heartbeats (from his Veneer album) is an acoustic guitar driven, slow down of the electropop original by The Knife. I learned about the song in an episode of Bones entitled “The Salt in the Wounds” and is one of my favorite cover songs since.
No Exceptions: Marriage Equality
Written on October 16, 2009 at 11:24 pm, by cct
The U.S. Supreme Court tossed out any racially based limitations on marriage in the landmark 1967 Loving v. Virginia case. In the unanimous decision, the court said that “Under our Constitution, the freedom to marry, or not marry, a person of another race resides with the individual and cannot be infringed by the state.”
The above is the closing paragraph of the CNN article about the racist Louisiana judge who would not marry an interracial couple. In my previous post “Empty Spaces/A Moment without Hapas“, I mention briefly my support of same-sex marriage, but to not draw away from the point of the post, I didn’t elaborate. I am elaborating now…
